What is the Spain Digital Nomad Visa?

The Spain Digital Nomad Visa — officially the Visa para Teletrabajadores de Carácter Internacional — was introduced under Spain's Ley de Startups (Startup Law) in January 2023. It is designed specifically for remote workers, freelancers, and digital professionals who earn their income from clients or employers based outside of Spain.

For UK nationals who moved to Spain before the Brexit deadline and maintained their residency, the situation is different. But for the large majority of UK nationals wanting to move to Spain today, the Digital Nomad Visa is one of the most accessible and attractive options available — particularly for tech workers, consultants, creatives, and anyone whose work can be done entirely online.

After one year on the initial visa, you can apply for a residency permit (TIE) that is valid for up to three years and can be renewed for a further two years. After five continuous years of legal residence in Spain, you can apply for long-term permanent residency.

Who Qualifies for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa?

To be eligible for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa as a UK national, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Non-EU nationality: The visa is open to all non-EU nationals, including UK citizens post-Brexit.
  • Remote work arrangement: You must work for a company or clients based outside Spain. You may work for a Spanish company, but no more than 20% of your total income can come from Spanish sources.
  • Minimum income: You must earn at least 200% of Spain's minimum inter-professional wage. In 2025, this is approximately €2,646 per month (€31,752 per year). If you are bringing dependants, the threshold increases by 75% for a spouse/partner and 25% for each additional dependent child.
  • Work history: You must demonstrate at least three months of continuous employment or self-employment activity (one year if employed by a foreign company and applying for a job transfer).
  • Clean criminal record: You must provide a criminal record certificate from the UK, apostilled and certified translated into Spanish.
  • Health insurance: You must have private health insurance valid in Spain for the entire duration of your stay. Travel insurance is not sufficient — you need a full healthcare policy.

Required Documents

The documentation required for a Spain Digital Nomad Visa application is extensive. Missing or incorrectly prepared documents are the primary reason applications are delayed or refused. Here is the complete list:

Personal Documents

  • Valid UK passport (6+ months remaining)
  • Completed national visa application form
  • Recent passport photographs
  • UK criminal record certificate (apostilled)
  • Certified Spanish translation of all UK documents
  • Proof of address in the UK

Professional & Financial Documents

  • Employment contract or client contracts
  • Employer authorisation letter (if employed)
  • Last 3 months' payslips or invoices
  • Last 3 months' bank statements
  • Private health insurance certificate
  • Accommodation in Spain (rental contract or letter)
Important: All non-Spanish documents must be accompanied by a sworn (certified) translation into Spanish carried out by a translator officially accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. UK public documents must also carry an Apostille stamp from the FCDO before translation. Agrin UK manages both the Apostille and translation process for all clients.

The Beckham Law: Tax Benefits for Digital Nomads

One of the most significant financial advantages for new Spain residents is the Beckham Law (Régimen Especial para Trabajadores Desplazados a Territorio Español), named after the footballer David Beckham who famously used it when he joined Real Madrid.

Under the Beckham Law, qualifying new tax residents of Spain pay a flat 24% income tax rate on Spanish-sourced income up to €600,000 per year, rather than the standard progressive rates (which reach 47% at higher income levels). The regime can apply for the year of arrival plus the following five tax years — up to six years in total.

Digital Nomad Visa holders who have not been tax resident in Spain in the previous five years are generally eligible to apply. The application must be made within six months of registering with Spanish Social Security or starting work in Spain. Agrin UK advises all eligible clients on this regime as part of our service.
